BSP thread sizes are a bit weird. The size relates to the internal diameter of the(steel) pipe it was intended to secure. For instance, a 1/4" BSP union is intended to secure a pipe with 1/4" I.D. Modern piping is thinner walled, so the comparison doesn't quite work, but hope this helps.
And yes, I am old enough to remember when the metric invasion!

I am with the Great Bearded One.
I use Dowty washers on my carb / fuel pump inlet and outlet / sump plug and back axle plug.
They seal with much less torque than fibre or copper washers.
Available from most Hydraulic pipe suppliers. I am sure they are specified by the pipe fitting size rather than ID.
Austins like Imperial non EU sizes !!!
Self centering ones are the best for our application.
