Steering column shaft finishes

Thanks for the summary.

I also maybe guilty of painting the occasional washer.
The painting takes no time at all... waiting for the paint to dry on the other hand....

One further bit of information is that the shaft is neatly machined, and rust free, where it rests in the bushes at either end, and in between, where it has the rougher machining - and the rust - it is a slightly smaller diameter. This makes sense as when crusty with rust it easily pulled out through the bushes.

So I think painting / sealing the bit that went rusty, and greasing the part in the bushes might be the solution for me.
