Three speed ball change

Has anyone ever managed to tighten up a worn 3 speed ball change to remove sloppiness?
I suspect that the steel retaining ring and the aluminium casting are very securely joined and rather as in traditional matrimony, won't part until death. Charles

I've removed the ring (it's invariably been well soaked in oil so isn't bad) then taken the gear lever out, welded up the slot and ground it back to width. Seems to work and is quite a difference when done, I think I've done two over the years.

Yes, I ground mine back too and it improved it greatly. I'm presuming its the same ruse as for 'tightening' up worn Torque tube sockets?

I made a key to undo the nut. Then had the slot welded up with rods for dissimilar metals. Then milled a new slot with a single point tool. Then finally turned down a 5/16" BSF ht set screw to fit the slot. When you assemble put the nut in with bearing fit and set it where it is free with no play. It transforms the box making it like new. |
