ok, I've read that - but is it something people check for regularly when adding this new part? Should one use a thicker gasket just in case if not confident in assessing such matters?

It is something that should be checked every time a dynamo is replaced, excess clearance through use of an overly thick gasket will cause timing scatter.

So, what's too much and what's too little when it comes to backlash on the dynamo gear?
I spoke to Vince Leek this week in my search for new timing gears and he recommended .004"
