My thought exactly - but its shape does not seem to be that of a standard briefcase. Might it be a portable stove? Or, is Daddy going to keep working while the family have a holiday? Today, father would be clutching a laptop and a folding screen, printed with an office background, to prop up behind him on the beach.

No, it's a standard Sirram 2-place picnic set, first introduced in the mid-1930s and continuing into the late-1960s, initially with china crockery, later with plastic items.

As a fully qualified sad old git I have a collection of 2 person and 4 person Sirram picnic sets. (c/w meths burners for the kettles) I must get them to an auto jumble unless anyone here is after one at a reasonable price...collection only as they are small to medium suitcase size
