old photos - Scarlet O'Hara - 23-11-2024

This morning I was looking through some old paperwork and came across an envelope, postmarked 1974, containing some photographs which I thought might be of interest to some. I know nothing about the Ulster although it does sport a 750MC badge on the side, does anybody recognise the location?. The barn find could be from anytime and anywhere although Taplows stopped blending wiskey in the 1980's.  Information on the back of the Nippy photos is dated Singapore 27,28,29 March 1970.

Well the Singapore pictures were presumably from a relatively major event as RTS was Radio and Television Singapore and that looks like the bottom half of a TV camera on the platform.

edit: ah seems to have been the same date as the Singapore Grand Prix. Perhaps a support race or demonstration of some sort?

edit/edit:
perhaps this corner:

edit/edit/edit: you can tell its snowing at the moment, but this intrigues me as, if you zoom in, then I would put money that the chap in white shorts is the same one in both pics.

RE: old photos - Jeff Taylor - 23-11-2024

The first and second photos remind me of two images I found online which I posted to the 'Gallery (Pre-war Specials)' back in 2017 of the 'Bouley Bay Hill Climb' on the Island of Jersey.

The Ulster looks to me like NV 316 and I think that is Pierre de Villiers driving it.

Stuart

I only know because there is an upcoming article in the Grey Mag on NV 316 that I have had the pleasure of editing  Smile.

PS There is a similar picture in the article which suggests that this might have been taken at Wiscombe Park in 1959.

Looks to be the same corner indeed -- you can just catch a glimpse of the Transit van beside the VW ambulance, present in both pics.

The caravan in the first picture of NV316 makes me think Wiscombe but I can't align the topography in the second with Wiscombe, even allowing for 60 years of tree growth and evolution.

RE: old photos Ulster NV316 - geoffharrison - 24-11-2024

It is AMOC Wiscombe , 18 September 1960 , with Pierre de Villiers driving .
The 750 Bulletin of November featured the car at Wiscombe on the front page.
The August 1960 750 Bulletin featured the car at Brands Hatch , 750 Trio Meeting , June 1960 .
I bought NV316 from Geoff., Winder in 1993 and after a rebuild my son Greg. and I competed
with it reqularly in VSCC and PWA7 Bert Hadley sprints and hillclimbs until 2015 .
It was replaced by the ex Reg. Nice Ulster KJ5053 .

RE: old photos - Charles P - 25-11-2024

Sorry Geoff. You know that car and its history better than anyone so I disagree with trepidation, but I still don’t see Wiscombe in that photo.
In 1960 the finish was at the start of the Castle Straight, and the only corner similar to the one in the photo is Sawbench, and that doesn’t look like Sawbench to me. At Sawbench the ground inside the hairpin falls away, it doesn’t have a hillock there. And whilst the trees have grown up a lot it was always woody.
I guess the 750 Bulletin had a miscaption

This is Sawbench corner at Wiscombe in 1960

RE: old photos - stuartu - 25-11-2024

I am not familiar with Wiscombe but the limited view of the surrounding countryside in the action shot made me wonder if it was Firle.

Stuart

Edited to add, I must dig out my old Bulletins!
