Carnography - Duncan Grimmond - 23-02-2024

Possibly of little interest to many here but it certainly made me smile…

I've always had  soft spot for the Atlantic, but I would be a bit concerned about the camber angle of the left-hand front wheel on that example.

RE: Carnography - Ivor Hawkins - 23-02-2024

Yes, that near side front wheel is certainly at a jaunty angle, still love it though, original colour, original registration and the original interior…lovely.

The last example I saw on the road, circa 1969, wasn’t quite on the road, it was upside down in the adjacent ditch.

Would it be unfair to describe the handling as transatlantic?

Regards,

Stuart

Absolutely fair, though you wouldn’t want to attempt any spirited driving with a Devon, Dorset or heaven forbid a Hereford!

Richard Usher has an immaculate Austin Atlantic. It's displayed in his 'Great British Car Journey'. He took it on one of Malcolm's Cumbria Runs a few years ago. I remember it was quite big!! We came across it broken down at one point. Some sort of ignition problem I think. Can't remember exactly what but an A7 component from the spares under my car's back seat fixed it.

It was at Ravenstonedale, Steve.   We had lunch at the pub in the village, blessed with the most magnificent urinals in the gents I remember!

I can never make my mind up whether the Austin Atlantic or the Metropolitan were the most naff cars ever made.  I say Austin Atlantic as the Bugatti Atlantic was a different kettle of fish altogether.

It is good that at least a few Austin Atlantics have survived.

RE: Carnography - Chris Garner - 24-02-2024

Whilst at college in Nottingham doing my A levels, a friend had a convertible Fiat Topolino which was rather novel. Later he was bought a 1500 Metropolitan which I really enjoyed, both as a driver and as a passenger. It was relatively fast and accelerated well...in those days. Girls loved it but there wasn't much room for them! Remember running into the back of a taxi outside the Black Boy. ( those who know the city will remember this, now sadly lost, establishment ) The driver was none too happy but a few pound notes changed hands and we ended up in a bar drinking ( even more ) with him! Irresponsible but happy days!
