New owner - Captain Mike - 04-07-2021

Hi all

I have just purchased my Austin seven 1935, which is in very good conditions but requires work to bring it up to a good standard , such as paint chips repairs, new chrome items and correct head lamps and side lamps, I bought it knowing it needed a new head gasket which I have fitted but not run yet

I have a couple of questions, how do I tell if it is a Ruby or not ?
What are the abbreviations relating to Austin sevens such as RP etc. ?

Anyhow I am looking forward to running her in the next few days if it ever stops raining!

I have attached a photo

Regards

Mike

The car is a Mark 1 Ruby saloon, series identifier is (I think) ARQ. It's immediate predecessor is the RP Saloon, like this one:

They are mechanically very similar, apart from the change from 19" to 17" wheels, and a synchromesh gearbox.

For models see this list: http://a7ca.org/austin-seven/models/

Thanks for that info, If I look at the body number on the gearbox tunnel would that be where the identifying number will be ?

Cheers

Mike

Four things to look for. Engine number, chassis number, car number and body number.

see here: http://a7ca.org/downloads/QuoteThisNumber.pdf

Hi Captain Mike

That looks to be in rather nice condition. The body shape is indeed ARQ Ruby which places it between 1934 and mid-1936. It has the correct "shallow" style front wings. The stainless steel wheel centres are from a later ARR Ruby, but are easily changed to the smaller plain cap type (carried over from the RP) if originality is important to you. Is your car on the register of surviving A7's ?

Link below to the Austin Seven Clubs' Association Chassis Register / Register of Surviving A7's as mentioned by John above. Key your registration number into the box and click on 'Search'.

Hi thanks for all the help, i know my headlights are not the correct ones also, because they are Wipac and have a hole for a side light, can anybody confirm the correct ones please
additionally it is not on the Austin seven register but soon will be

thanks everybody

Are you sure your headlights are not correct ?, Wipac did a conversion with larger diameter glass and rims to take the replacement,s, the shells look right to me, Edit to add CVS and Holden do the correct sidelights.
