What was the original diameter of a brake cable? The new cables are generally to big for the front compensator and do not move through nicely.

I measured one (all steel) at 5mm. I'd be worried about the (rubbish) securing method if the adjusting compensator hole was any larger in diameter. See other recent thread if you haven't read it already.

Austin Seven brake cables were originally 3/16 inch diameter.
Modern replacements are 5 mm diameter, a tad too large to work comfortably with original fittings.

So are these "original" fittings the first aftermarket adjustables as per the modern pattern we can buy today?
This is an original Austin adjuster, but couldn't be used with new cable as it is swaged.

One possible alternative would maybe be to use 4 mm cable. Rupture charge can be 1000 kg or more. Metric sizes are every mm.
