Cast Iron Brake Shoes - john williams - 26-03-2021

I am currently rebuilding an RP saloon, that has been "pending" in the garage for fifteen years. On stripping the rear brakes, I find that one of the brake shoes is made from cast iron!! Part number A 4164 cast into the shoe. I have never seen or heard of these shoes in the 50+ years I have worked on Austin Sevens. The car uses 1 1/4 shoes. What was/is the application for cast iron shoes?
Perhaps some one may need this shoe for a particular application.

I believe that some crankcases were also cast iron, possibly for military applications. I feel sure that there is someone on the forum who knows more about these things, but could it be that the War Office also asked for cast iron brake shoes?

I have a number of cast iron brake shoes, mostly offset.

Broken shoes, often welded, were not uncommon. A quality CI would be quite strong and malleable c.i would be more so. Incidentally offset shoes often emntioned. What is the distiction and when did it apply please?
(If a shoe is bedded primarily at the fulcrum end a stong bending force.)
