HELP needed with original painting - Tony Betts - 30-11-2017

It's strange how things go.

Around 30 minutes ago, an old austin 7 owner brought me a few things to be sold.

A non austin 7 wheel brace.
An FZ 22 carb in nice condition.
And a very clean woodrow book.

The most interesting is an original painting of an austin 7.

RE: HELP needed with original painting - Ruairidh Dunford - 30-11-2017

I have a set of these cigar cards in a special frame Tony, they came from my uncle who used to work at the W&H Wills factory in Bristol.

Is it 'an' original painting of a seven or 'the' original?

RE: HELP needed with original painting - Michael - 30-11-2017

It is from Castella's set of cigar(ette) cards that was sold or a 'special offer' as a framed set, I think in the '80s or '80s.

Plenty of examples on 'tinternet, for example

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Collectors-Cards-Bus-Transport-Castella-Panatellas-Britains-Motoring-History-/182886992135?hash=item2a94ea0907

As to whether it actually original artwork, I know not. In theory that should normally go back to the artist.

RE: HELP needed with original painting - Tony Betts - 30-11-2017

I've checked it in the light and it's obvious it's an original painting, and not a print.

The gentleman was selling, doing so as he is emigrating to Thailand.

Explained he had bought it, probably 30 or 40 years ago. Maybe more in an isle worth auction.

So the question is,

Does anyone know anything about it.

The quality of the painting and detail is such that the painting is of an existing car, rather than from memory.

So can anyone make up the reg ? And does the car still exist.

Help would be apreciated.

Tony.

Here is a closer picture of the reg.

Tony.

Sorry it took a little time to get the full listing up.

Hi R,

The picture is an original water colour. Signed. The frame States it's the one used for the castella cards.

My best guess, on the reg PA 7105 or 9

Tony.

If it is original it looks like you are in the money Tony.

Thanks nick,

I apreciate those prices may be inflated, if they are in a gallery?

This picture when bought in auction, cost £450.00 as I say it was decades ago though.

So he may be right.

Tony.

Famous car... painted by this chap and then driven by presenters of Top Gear.

RE: HELP needed with original painting - Bryan Norfolk - 30-11-2017

To my knowledge, this car has featured on at least 4 cigarette card sets.
Vintage Cars by Carreras Ltd No 13
Britains Motoring History by Castella Cigars No 23
Golden Age of Motoring by Sharman Newspapers No 5
100 Great cars of the World by Sunday Times No 15

All of these cards are illustrated in my published book 'AUSTIN SEVEN - Ciigarette and Trade Cards'

Tony,

If you want to ask Eric Bottomley about the car, he can be contacted through this site although the T & Cs might put you off:-
