Stub axel cracks - leaf200 - 19-06-2020

I was just changing my king pins and found this:

RE: Stub axel cracks - Dave Wortley - 19-06-2020

Yes, I have one like that. Caused by a Ford Zephyr bashing into my car. Kingpin smashed and axle eye very deformed.

RE: Stub axel cracks - Steve Jones - 19-06-2020

They can do that, David, but I know what you use your car for. Comes with the territory I'm afraid my friend!

Steve

Mud inside the back plates !!!
I am Impressed !!!!
If the stub axle is like that what the hell do the axle eyes look like ????
Or are they all built up with weld reinforcement.

RE: Stub axel cracks - Zetomagneto - 19-06-2020

Yes, I’ve binned a few like that. Age and use takes its toll

RE: Stub axel cracks - leaf200 - 19-06-2020

My next job is to inspect the axle. Which is standard and not built up.

RE: Stub axel cracks - Tony Betts - 19-06-2020

cant beleive nobody has suggested they would weld it up and use it yet.

were are usuals Huh

RE: Stub axel cracks - Zetomagneto - 19-06-2020

Hi Tony, Yes I was expecting that as well, or a bit of JB weld.
You must have seen dozens of these, typical fatigue failure.
All the best, Gene

At least the hub is likely to sag rather than suddenly detach. I have detected cracks there at 100,000 miles but much more insidious progressing through the axle not the backplate. If it were not for the risk of inititaing such more serious failure, welding with proper preparation would not be unreasonable. it would be interessing to know what made of; generous size compared other cars.
(incidendtlly when hunting cracks on stub axles on other cars and trailers, can occur at the top due cornering loads)

RE: Stub axel cracks - Mike Costigan - 20-06-2020

Why weld it, that's good for a few more years yet  Tongue
