Very excited - registration - jpsmit - 10-03-2020

First of all, thanks all for this forum and the wisdom found therin! Someone somewhere had a link to the Kithead trust http://kitheadtrust.org.uk/ through which I was able to delve into the registration of my 7.

MW 6137.

Turns out it is a Wiltshire number and an inquiry to the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre brough this response:

‘MW 6137; Skurrys – written in pencil; A.H. Graver; Savernake Forest; Marlborough; Car Austin; 31/01/1930’

So first of all, if I don't have a birth date I at least have an adoption date which is a start! I don't see the word Skurry's on the attached pic so may have to follow that up, but, any idea how I might find some further information on A.H. Graver?

I am very excited.

Quick note, turns out Skurry's of Swindon was a Vauxhall dealership.

great news! What is the car number, or has this already been discussed? Or if you dont have that, then the chassis number will at least give you an approximate build enough to satisfy any registration authority. i.e. from Wyatt records.

I wonder if Skurrys is spelt incorrectly, and it should be Skurrays.

A short history of Skurrays:-

A. H. Graves ( not Graver )  Arthur Herbert.  Born 26.08.1895, died 29.03.1966, leaving an estate of £2955 ( £56K today )

1939: described as an agricultural estate agent, living at the Durley Estate Office, Durley House, Marlborough.

awesome! thanks - got this from the historical society today

So, got this:

Skurry’s were indeed the dealers. The 1931 Kelly’s Trade Directory Lists:

‘Skurry’s Ltd.; Motor & Automobile Engineers, Car Agents & Garage, 30 & 32 High Street, Swindon.

The directory also lists the owner:

‘Arthur Herbert GRAVES, Durley, Savernake Forest, Marlborough’.

so yes, A.H. Graver is actually Arthur Herbert Graves the owner of the dealership.

so being as others on that page are pencil Skurrays too, perhaps it was his personal car?

Well lads, here I sit completely unmotivated to either work on a car or work on the house - so I am scanning documents, mostly work but some fun. I thought in the theme of this thread that you might enjoy the one document that did come with the car. I bought the car from Richard Shipman who brought it to Canada. The ownership confirms that the car was indeed initially registered January 31, 1930.

Of course any attempts to help me identify previous owners is wonderfully received! Cheers all!

So what actually IS the car body? And do you have a chassis number? The B- car number presently means no ledger details available, but they could have written it wrongly... if it were B1, they would exist...

B 6298 according to the log book.
