Corroded water inlet stud boss - Andy Cawley - 13-01-2020

The boss in the water jacket that is drilled and tapped to accept the stud holding on the water inlet manifold is corroded almost completely away.

I am reluctant to have it welded or brazed, does anybody have experience of using epoxy putty or the like to fix this problem?

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

I've no direct experience of these, but if you weren't aware of them, they may be of use?

Have you considered one of these from Willy McKenzie at Austin Reproduction Parts Ltd ? The first link is to their eBay page, the second to their company website.

You can make your own plate up.. A bit of brass or stainless about 1/2" wide and 3/16" thick and long enough to bridge the gap. Tap a hole in that for a new 1/4" stud. Put this plate behind the broken "boss" and screw the new stud through the broken boss and into your new bridge piece. You could use some epoxy stuff to hold the plate in place whilst you fit the water manifold. I had to do the same on the top hose outlet on the cylinder head 40 years ago - still works !

Depending how corroded, an oversize stud can sometimes be tapped in. Otherwise yes to the above methods and no to epoxy putty.

I stand corrected! Yes, those mentioned by Jeff were the ones I was looking for...

RE: Corroded water inlet stud boss - Belinni - 13-01-2020

What do you mean?

Surely the one you posted and the other one serve the same purpose

Not in this case Belinni, be careful of a bargain, it is not always what it seems.

The ones sold by Willie are significantly better quality, the shape is more accurate and the fixing holes are ready countersunk.

I have experience of both products (and the one for the top water manifold) and you most certainly get what you pay for here.
