(For me) unknown hydraulic brakes - Dellie - 21-12-2019

Hello all,

Can you help my identify my hydraulic brakes?
The front ones look like MGA braking parts but I'm not sure.
There are 2 cylinders/side.

The rear ones are single cylinder with a parking brake lever on the back.

There was a hole drilled in the drum for the adjuster.

This was the master cylinder, from lockheed.
Austin princess and Jaguar XK120 looks the same.

Early Morris Minor by Lockheed which are used on quite a few Sevens

Front, back and master?
Can I just order everything from a Morris Minor and Austin Seven drums to renew everything?

RE: (For me) unknown hydraulic brakes - Zetomagneto - 21-12-2019

948cc Morris 1000, not the later 1098cc as they had larger front brakes.

ESM Morris Minors stock a good range of brake parts but as Zeto has said and alluded to, make sure your order the correct parts (i.e. by quoting the Lockheed part numbers on your existing cylinders when contacting ESM) as I believe there were differences between the 1948 Series MM Minor - 918cc / Series II Minor - 803cc / Minor 1000 - 948cc and the later 1098cc cars. Note that ESM offer both original Lockheed / Delphi parts and 'Pattern' parts.

I was told from several sources of supply that the early Morris Minor wheel cylinders such as yours appear to be are no longer available;they can be professionally reconditioned however so don't scrap your originals. The later ones need different positioning for the holes in the back plate and also in with my experience are harder to fit in but then I am not an engineer. The rear cylinders with hand brake lever on are available and fit [fairly] easily.I hope this helps .

They are Minor 1000 7" brakes, not the earlier and difficult to source MM series brakes.

Just a word of warning, there are are some "cheaper" master cylinders available through the usual sources. At its best the MC is poor, advisable to get best quality available, (or use an alternative).

Obviously the following doesn't apply to Dellie as Charles has confirmed his are the more readily available Morris 1000 hydraulic components.

However as both Richard and Charles have said, I too believe the early 1948 Series MM Front Wheel Cylinders have been unobtainable for some time. The good news for any forum members with these early cylinders fitted to their Sevens is that ESM are said to be in the process of having a new batch manufactured which may be available sometime in 2020. This news was apparently released in their most recent October / November 2019 newsletter which sadly isn't as yet available to view on their website.

ESM do stock a genuine A.P. Lockheed Master Cylinder albeit 13/16" bore rather than the original 7/8" bore fitted to Pre 1962 cars at £75 inc. VAT.

Charles Ware will recondition your old Master Cylinder for £130.50p inc. VAT

They also offer a genuine new 1962 onwards 13/16" bore Master Cylinder for £77.99p inc. VAT
