Hub removal sockets - Mgibson - 29-04-2019

please can I get the socket sizes I need for the front and rear castellated nut. Think rear is 1 1/4 BSW . .?

Are you sure they're 1 1/4" Whit ? - 1 1/4" Whit is HUGE - my 1935 rear axle castellated nut appears to be 3/4" whit / 7/8" BS.

Brammer Buck & Hickman stock a Melco TW21 Box Spanner which is a 5/8" x 3/4" Whitworth @ £13.91p each inc. VAT.

There's also a 1/2" drive 3/4" Whitworth socket on ebay @ £14.21p.

Jaw opening for 3/4 W is given as 1.3 inch. 1 5/16 AF is 1.313.
In their day few owners would possess an expensive large socket set and probably few mechanics would bother to fetch. A 12 inch Crescent style shifting spanner suffices.
(In larger sizes sockets do not need to be a precise fit. Can often line readily available AF or metric with a strip of hexagonal folded sheet metal to obtain a fit.
The front stub axle nut does not require tightening to any great torque. No point in crushing the spacer piece. It is usually easier to split the hub instead of winkling out the split pin so again a socket is not required.

For the front, use a 14mm plug socket. The plug box spanner supplied with MkII Ruby head, is perfect for the job.
