Hi
I am looking to restore an Austin 7 engine owned by my father to run as a static engine but need help to identify/date it so that I can source the correct parts. The number stamped on it is M222396. Dad seems to think that it is mid '30s.....? Can anyone help please?

Your Dad would appear to be spot on - I reckon its an early 1935 engine but am happy to be corrected by the more knowledgeable!

Grateful Alastair. Just want to make sure that I don't waste money on the wrong bits! Not surprised that dad is right, he is in his mid eighties and worked on these a bit as a young trainee motor mechanic. He owned a 1935 model when he was courting my mother and always says it was his favourite ever car to drive despite the relative lack of power. He was able to remember the registration number but it seems that it didn't survive sadly..........

If there is a bolt head beneath the manifold in the centre of the crankcase it will be high compression, if not low compression.
Be fully aware that if you rebuild this engine that there is more than a fair chance that you will be a Austin Seven owner shortly after.

Cheers Derek - useful to know and I will check.
They're now a bit pricey for my limited pocket unfortunately but nice thought. It would be good to experience what Dad constantly goes on about at some point though...!
