RE: AllAlloyCup progress - JonE - 08-11-2018 Looking great. Any thoughts on likely difference in eventual weight between the two construction routes; GE original and as pictured? RE: AllAlloyCup progress - AllAlloyCup - 08-11-2018 Hi Jon I think? The skin will be lighter and stronger But I’ve used 1” ash ( instead of 3/4”)and slightly heavier marine ply for the bulkheads and floor So possibly not much in it? Regards BillG RE: AllAlloyCup progress - AllAlloyCup - 08-11-2018 On reflection it should be quite a bit lighter as the wings are also aluminium, as are the flitch plates undersills and battery box. I reckon there’s also a kg of screws etc as I was forever buying more! Will try the bathroom scales method as proposed by Jim Once the engine and gearbox are in. Once it’s had a full trial assembly with wing piping etc, I’ll decide if I am going to paint the wings black. Any ideas on keeping the aluminium tidy or Just let it weather gracefully? Regards Bill G RE: AllAlloyCup progress - JonE - 14-11-2018 what about a max protection wax like ankor? RE: AllAlloyCup progress - Mike Costigan - 14-11-2018 Bill, If you are just using the TR as a shelf, may I have it? ... please RE: AllAlloyCup progress - jansens - 14-11-2018 My alloy special has only been scotchbrite rubbed so far and every time I touch it my hands come off black from fine ali dust! This is years after making it. It all need a wash/degrease I guess. I am undecided if I should paint (and fill) it or leave it raw but unpolished. It's not good enough to polish. If left raw I don't know how you protect it but I was guessing some kind of wax? My plan was possibly leave the body natural and paint the steel parts which is the valances and wings (once I make them). I could make the wings in alloy but worry about them hardening and cracking with vibrations. Simon RE: AllAlloyCup progress - AllAlloyCup - 14-11-2018 Hi Mike I always knew this garage was going to be small but SWmBO said I couldn’t have a double garage so it is “really only 1 1/2 wide” !! The TR3A’s battery has just died so it’s not going anywhere just now but thanks for the offer to remove it. I doubt if the 4 wings weigh 2kilos. I’ll be try fitting them again next week. That last photo was taken in panorama mode on my Phone which makes it look bigger than it is. A taller garage would help. My pal Peter who made the tail cover skin for me has so many nice Jaguars (3 so far!) plus other classics that hecrecently bought two car Lifts so that he can stack his collection! If I can get 25bhp from the A7 it’s power to weight ratio Will be about the same as the TR with its 95bhp. Regards Bill G RE: AllAlloyCup progress - jansens - 14-11-2018 A two car modern garage is at least 4 Austin 7s wide! Mine is a 2 and a bit supposedly and I have an MGB, an Austin 7 and a pile of Riley 9 bits in mine. This was my Chummy in a car park at my favourite pub that everyone in modern cars complained was too small! Simon RE: AllAlloyCup progress - AllAlloyCup - 14-11-2018 Made a little progress with fitting the 4x wings thus afternoon. It’s beginning to look more of a motor car! Still to fit some of the piping and step mats. Although it’s all Alloy I’m pleased that it still looks like a Cup. NB The Pano feature on my camera phone has distorted the wing line and a few other details.
