Let out of my box at last! - Scarlet O'Hara - 23-06-2018

My mechanic man has finally stopped prevaricating about what to change and what not to change and let me out of my box for a bit of fresh air. Said he was surprised by how well I seemed to go - especially my pulling power! No sure what he was going on about.

Hi, the car is a 1930 Boyd-Carpenter Special fitted with an LAP overhead valve cylinder head and 30 MOV Solex carburettor. An example was road tested by Motor Sport in September 1930 when the standard car was priced at £197 – 10s and the OHV cylinder head costing an extra £25.

Formed in 1926 Boyd-Carpenter and Thompson Limited traded from the former Gordon England service garage at 47,West End Lane, Kilburn NW6. Francis H. Boyd-Carpenter had been an employee of Gordon England involved in the production of their popular Brooklands Sports model while also raced his own Austin 7’s at the Brooklands circuit. Initially the company provided servicing, repair and specialist tuning of Austin Sevens but in about 1927 they started production of their own design of bodywork for the Austin Seven chassis - the Boyd-Carpenter Special.  The firm continued to be very active in motor racing gaining many successes, their most famous cars being Mr and Mrs Jo-Jo. Mrs Jo-Jo was developed by Boyd-Carpenter from one of Gordon Englands Streamliners and used for circuit racing while Mr Jo-Jo, a specially tuned Gordon England Cup model, was used for long distance record attempts.  In 1930 the firm changed its name to Boyd-Carpenter and Company Limited but continued building their B-C Special Austin 7 cars.  The firm had 9 employees – 2 making the wooden frames, 2 forming the aluminium bodies and 5 working on the engines and servicing work.

It’s believed that the total production of BC Specials was only 32 of which 5 or 6 are thought to still exist today.

Has your mechanic man got cars locked up in all the containers? Smile

Well done Gerry - looks great and I too remember that pulling power, noticeably more torque.

The name doesn't ring a bell, but I sold my LAP head to a Cornish BC owner back in the late 1970s.
