Steering Column Assembly - Chris KC - 03-06-2025 After all these years I've finally got around to stripping a steering column - the only bit of an A7 I've never ventured inside! I spent a fair bit of time perusing available guidance but still have two rather fundamental questions. 1. The upper thrust washer BM41 above the worm gear - does it go bevel side down? I'd appreciate confirmation. ![]() 2. Can anyone enlighten me on the role of the "peg" BM20 please? ![]() Thank you! RE: Steering Column Assembly - Howard Wright - 03-06-2025 Hi Chris This drawing on the archive seems to show the bevel towards the worm. ![]() I imagine the peg holds the outer column to the screw portion at the bottom of bm17. Cheers Howard RE: Steering Column Assembly - Chris KC - 03-06-2025 Thanks Howard - good call (I'd completely forgotten that drawing!) The section on page 189 of The Companion - and a certain amount of common sense - seems to concur; so bevel down it is. Regarding the peg, no, I don't think so. The brass section at the base of the column is staked on, but not with a continuous peg (being hollow inside for the other bits to pass through). The parts list suggests it's a component of the worm / inner shaft assembly - ![]() I can only presume BM19 is either the worm itself, or the inner shaft (it isn't illustrated), as BM 42 is the lower thrust washer, and BM20 is the elusive "peg". I wonder could it perhaps be the "key" which locks the worm to the shaft? RE: Steering Column Assembly - Nick Turley - 04-06-2025 Bevel goes towards the worm. |
