Well Alan, it's all your fault really!
I took your sage advice to heart and was so careful ensuring that there was cam lobe clearance with the Barlow rods that I fouled up elsewhere.

Glad to see you have found the cuprit Charles.
As a matter of interest what is the rear main bearing you are using, presumably a large ball bearing?
What is the advantage, and part number or dimensions of the bearing please.

Yes, large ball race - whichever one has the same ID and OD as the original roller. Don't have the spec to hand. 
The advantage is that when your engine is buzzing along at 5,500 revs when you press hard on the clutch you are not then adding insult to injury by loading the crank still further when it is already bending under whip. It also takes away the risk of front bearing flange fracture.
Overall a much more sensible approach to the bottom end.
The important factor is to make an accurate spacer to go between the flywheel and the bearing to resist axial movement. Mine has 2 thou clearance with the flywheel loaded to a known and repeatable torque.

Two ball races held between the crank and the crank gear (no rear flange) . Effectively floating. You could put one ball and one roller.

Rear cylindrical roller bearing SKF CRM 10-  1 1/4" shaft, capacity dynamic capacity 8,000 lb.

Replaced with deep groove ball bearing SKF RMS 10- 1 1/4" shaft, dynamic capacity 5,700 lb.

Front two single row angular contact bearings SKF AMS 9- 1 1/8" shaft, dynamic capacity 5,500 lb each.

Replaced with two deep groove ball bearings SKF RMS 9- 1 1/8" shaft, dynamic capacity 4,650 lb each.
