All Alloy Cup progress

Hi Mark

This early control panel is actually for a coil engine car,
As I’ve fitted a coil engine.

It’s an unusual panel apparently and caused some comment
on the Forum when I first published photos of it.
It’s thought to be fitted to the very first coil engined cars.

The Lucas control panel is now fully functional 
And works the sidelamps and headlamps.

Wanted a change from electrics so worked 
On some mechanical bits .

Refitted the ash wood bonnet rest and wired in the
The rear rubber bonnet rest and alloy tank surround.

Trial fitted the petrol tank with its filter and tap
which needed a small depression made in the forward alloy bulkhead.

Also drilled a hole in the transmission tunnel to pass through 
the speedo cable from the gearbox to the speedo head.

Still to make the exhaust downpipe so filled up a suitable length of 
straight piping with water and then filled it with sand.

Hope to visit my pal Peter, who has a hydraulic pipe bender, tomorrow.

Also fitted the cast alloy valve chest cover , carb etc and fan belt
And hoses.

So steady progress , apart from the rad shell.

Ps managing to find all the bits needed despite the chaos of the workbenches
just now, so will need to take timeout to tidy up!

I recently bought this small medallion on EBay
minted and sold as a souvenir of the British Empire Exhibition 
Which ran from April 1924 to October 1925.

Some parts of the huge Palace of Industry Pavilion became
The Gordon England car factory, producing Cups, Vans and Saloons in
Considerable numbers circa 3000+?, from 1926 ? Onwards.

The small brass medallion may find a place on my dash. In memoriam...

Spent an hour or so filling up a length of pipe 
With water and dribbling play sand into about a meter and a half
Of 40mm copper pipe, having sealed one end with strong duct
Tape. Kept going till no more
Water and bubbles rose to the top.

Sealed that end with more duct tape.

Borrowed Peter’s pipe bender today and marked up the
Pipe using the old pipe( too low) and some alloy wire
to give a guide to the bottom profile of this pipe 
which has to negotiate past an angle iron “hoop” which is
a feature of GE Cups.

The bender’s shaped fixtures are set up for
Larger diameter pipes so packed the outside of the pipe 
with cut up car magazines.

So far so good!

I’d made the pipe deliberately long in case the bender
Needed some extra leverage.

But this meant I couldn’t easily offer it up to check if
It was fitting OK.

So bit the bullet and cut the pipe roughly to length.
The sand inside the pipe was packed as hard as concrete!

But 5 minutes with the garden hose and it was all flushed out.

It looks as if I’m heading in the right direction but
Some of the curves need to be a tad sharper so
Will have to refill with sand again!! 

Off to vote to keep us in Europe so work suspended
till tomorrow or the weekend.

Curious Bill as to why you used copper pipe rather than steel?

Hi Ian

The engine came with a copper down pipe
And I thought it might be easier to fabricate...

My bending skills are basic though but it’s nearly there!
If it doesn’t work out I’ll try bit of steel piping.

Bending steel pipe isn't as difficult as many think. With an oxy-acetylene torch it's possible to heat a narrow strip on the inside of your bend and pull a little concertina fold. Allow to cool and move along a little and repeat. A quarter circle bend can usually be achieved in 3 or 4 heats.

Thanks Duncan , I don’t have oxy- acetylene

But it will have to go to a forge or a welder to get the flange put on.
