All Alloy Cup progress
Hi Hedd

Can I ask roughly how much an overhaul of
a Chummy type speedo might cost?

I’ve already got a new faceplate from Willie and
I can do my own nickel plating, in fact I’ve already
plated the case.

I had a rim wound 8 day clock overhauled recently
by a clockmaker  contact , courtesy of Ruairidh,
for about £150, but it’s now working perfectly.
Given the several hours involved and skills I thought
That was pretty good?

Hope your own Cup project is moving ahead?
But I know you have other Austins to maintain.

The Smiths Chronometric one I had rebuilt and adjusted was about £60.00 a few years ago. They also built a gearbox to match my drive which IIRC cost about £45.00(?)

I had a PA speedo. a vintage harcourt oil gauge and a coil switch/ammeter done about 18months ago. Inc chroming faces etc for £375. A bloke I found off facebook. They are still in the box. My cup is still hung off the roof thoigh it did come down recently so i could draw the prop cover for Mr Dunford to copy. Next job is to assemble the traction engine

I saw the suspended Cup !

I had a spare Chummy square transmission tunnel
And used that as I’ve switched to Hardy Spicer.

Have a nice weekend raising steam! Full size I presume?

No raising steam. Its had a hydraulic test this winter and ive machined about 1 inch of rubber off the diameter of the hind wheels to make them round again. Tomorrows job is to weigh up the wooden lagging (insulation) for reinstallation

Started to install the floors and steering column.
I put captive studs in the chassis rails so the floors
are easily fitted and lifted.

Mostly had been trial fitted with lots of template making 
before painting so 
going together without too much trouble.

Looks like I will have to put in an extra alloy cover plate to 
protect the bulkhead wiring and old BT junction boxes
 ( they each have Bakelite covers).

This wiring is at the top of the toe board and needs
something to stop feet affecting the connections.

Once all this is in place I can make the carb, choke, and distributor
linkages.

Weather deteriorating so work on wings, usually done outside , suspended.

Spent this morning fitting the refurbished Steering column, with its new casting
From David Cochrane,
Plus the accelerator pedal, throttle cross shaft, and mountings, the new 
control column tube gear, and the operation levers for the manual throttle 
and the advance retard mechanism.

Next tasks this week include try fitting the engine in the chassis to assess
The manifold routing , throttle control rod, and choke  operation
Of the OM SU.

No snags so far!!!

I discovered one or two issues with the pedals as both the
brake and clutch pedals are fitted in a very tight space so have had to 
Slightly modify the brake pivot pin. The toe boards may need some minor modification too.

To get access I removed both flitch plates and will refinish them
with the Nyalic before refitting.

With the flitches off Neil and I dropped the engine and gearbox in.
So can set up the handbrake for the first time, plus having a go at
Aligning the exhaust down pipe which came with car. It’s a pity the near
Side of the “hoop” wasn’t relieved like the offside( for the draglink)
So the pipe will need to dip under the hoop and come back up to meet the
silencer. Slightly concerned about how much travel there is on the radius arm
under maximum spring deflection on the near side?

I’ve installed a silencer between the crossmembers and now need to slightly
Extend the down pipe and put some small bends in it , so have bought
Some sand and will see if it can be bent manually with a former, or perhaps
With a hydraulic pipe bender which a mate has. It’s a 35mm pipe and may make the tail pipe out of it as well, larger than normal , we’ll see....

I hope I'm mistaken but that pipe looks like copper?
I am given to understand that extremely toxic fumes are given off...

Hi Duncan

All exhaust fumes are toxic, this pipe came with
the car and will serve as a template, so looking for a local firm
to make a custom pipe.
