Having gathered together all the bits to make a good propshaft I find the new UJs are too big. With one circlip fitted in the yolk the UJ sits off centre and the opposite circlip cannot be fitted. It seems to be about 50 thou too long. Oddly the spare UJ I have carried in the car for 30 years is also too big! All the yolks are the same (as are those on another spare propshaft) and the UJs came from one of our cherished suppliers.
Are there different types depending on year or do they have to be machined to fit?

The original Hardy Spicer part number for the UJ kits was K5-GB1 - this particular UJ kit fitted all the following vehicles:
Austin 7 1935/39, Big 7, Austin 8 (pre 1945), 10/4, Light 12/4 and Light 12/6.
Morris 8 1935/39, 10/4 and 12hp.
MG 1935/39 Magna, Magnette and Midget.
The 1952 Austin A30 (Seven) UJ kit was K5-LGB30.
I've a relatively new boxed UJ kit for my 1936 Morris 8 Tourer branded 'Power Train Products' part number 5-101X (K5-GB150) - this should also fit your Ruby.
Best to check with your Cherished Supplier Peter to confirm that the ones they've supplied you with are the modern equivalent to K5-GB1. There shouldn't be any need for machining.

As Roly suggests, looking at the catalogue GKN UJ - U152 is 23.8D x 61.3L - interestingly both the Morris Register Spares Service and a well known Morris Spares cherished supplier stock a UJ with the part number QL152 described as fitting the Morris 8, 10/4 and 12hp which as I mentioned in my earlier post is the same UJ as an Austin Ruby.

Some further information - Hardy Spicer from the 1930's to 1950's used to specify their dimensions based purely on the size of the cast / forged and machined journal with its four needle bearing caps removed. The journal dimensions for the original K5-GB1 were as follows:
D = 37/64" (14.684375mm)
L = 2.1/4" (57.15mm)

Thank you all, that's very helpful.
The one I'd been carrying for years is in a box marked HS150 315330, the two new ones were supplied in polythene packets with no numbers. All measure 23.8 x 62.8mm. The cruciform alone measures 56.7mm - but the caps are much thicker so this doesn't really mean much.
I'll go back to the supplier for a refund or replacement. He probably has a whole box of them!
