Henstridge Airfield, Wings and Wheels

Henstridge Airfield, Henstridge (Off A30 Shaftesbury/Sherborne), Somerset BA8 0TF

Gates open 10:00 hrs Adults £5:00 acc u/16s FREE Airfield closes approx. 17:30hrs (Limited disabled parking)

This popular event is in its eighteenth year and is still run by its original volunteer team. It is staged to help raise funds and awareness for the airfield-based Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. Given reasonably good weather across the southern UK, visitors can expect to see over 100 vintage/classic/modern light aircraft landing on this former wartime naval air-station. The event also hosts an equal number of classic vehicles of all types from the 1930s to modern super-cars. There is model flying from bi-planes to fast jets. Subject to tasking, the NEW air-ambulance helicopter will visit crowd-side to 'meet and greet'. There is all-day catering and a special Barbecue and Hog Roast. A unique feature is the lunch-time 'air-park-open' allowing everyone the to walk around the aircraft and take close-up photos. This year's traditional 'Fly-past Salute' by the BBMF will feature the newly overhauled LANCASTER escorted by TWO SPITFIRES.
(NOTE BBMF's Merlin engined craft have been grounded after routine maintenance showed a fault in one of the hurricanes, they are still flying chipmunks and the Griffon engined Sptifire(s), but what may show on the day is not known)

We also hope to be given another thrilling fly-over by the RED ARROWS and are in regular contact with other with other transiting display aircraft. To keep up to date see our website at www.dorsetcarclub,co.uk and follow us on Facebook. We pride ourselves on running a friendly and relaxed show for all the family while maintaining the high safety standards essential for aviation events. A great day out today at Henstridge Airfield. 54 happy miles each way, and a lovely sunny day with beautiful cars and planes in between.
We met and chatted to some great people, including one gentleman who introduced himself as the designer of Avon 'Sidecar' tyres!
There were lots of cars there, from a wide range or makes and years.
Last time we went (2015), there were more early biplanes. The commentator said that this was because the grass runway is currently out of action (works on site), and these planes with rear skid rather than wheel, don't really enjoy surfaced runways. They should be back next year though.
We were treated to a flypast by the 'red arrows' in the morning, and in the afternoon the 'Battle of Britain Memorial Flight' (BBMF) brought the Griffon engine Mk XIX Spitfire to do a few overhead passes.
The event was raising money for the Dorset Air Ambulance, which runs from the airfield.

Planes. I'm afraid my knowledge of these is slim to none, but hopefully you will enjoy them anyway.
