Jack Brabham is a no-brainer, but Mike Hawthorn might have given him a run for his money. I believe he was in the middle of a Riley restoration at the time of his death.
I feel that all the drivers from the 50s and 60s would have done a pretty good job. Senna would have been good, from the later era.

Didn't Fangio build his own special before he came to Europe? And, of course, Colin Chapman qualifies as an F1 racer, even if he didn't start in the 1956 French Grand Prix.

RIP Frank Williams.
I loved going to see Mansell in red 5 racing. Even did a hour coach trip to see his win at San Marino in 87. It took us 8 hours to get out of the car park, then we drove overnight back to the UK. Madness.

Bruce McLaren would easily beat any of the above. He started his racing career in an Austin Seven and was a very "hands on" designer and builder of race cars.

I suppose we should also add John Miles to the list; and come to think of it, Graham Hill was a dab hand with the spanners too.
