Gear box oil level - Siipo - 16-09-2019 Hello i bought my first austin seven with a 3-speed box and an eltos remote gear change. I tried to check, if i have enough oil in my gear box. If I open the big screw (1) I can just feel gears. How can I measure there the oil level? thanks for any hints. regards Siipo RE: Gear box oil level - Ivor Hawkins - 16-09-2019 Look on the opposite side of the gearbox and you should have hole in the floor and a square filler for the gearbox. The oil should reach the bottom of the thread, no more or you’ll likely find your clutch slipping! RE: Gear box oil level - Ian Williams - 16-09-2019 Its a three speed box Ivor so your advice although correct for a four speed is not right in this case, I would also add slightly less that reaching the bottom of the thread. With a three speed box the engine dip stick usually can be used for the gearbox level too, however in this case it appears we have a special so who knows which engine and dipstick is fitted. Probably best to drain and refill with the correct quantity then see if it can be measured with a dip stick through the hole. RE: Gear box oil level - Ivor Hawkins - 16-09-2019 My mistake, I thought it was a four speed! RE: Gear box oil level - AustinWood - 16-09-2019 The early engine dip-stick also works in the gearbox. Normally this is done through the filler hole but may not be possible with the remote gearchange. RE: Gear box oil level - "Slack Alice" Simon - 17-09-2019 Drain box Measure oil. Make up to recommended amount -take advice on this. Refill. Check with suitable stick and mark for reference. |
