The same technique can be used to remove bearing rings from inside blind holes. A bead of weld down the ring causes the ring to expand and this squeezes the softened metal. On cooling it shrinks and will drop out.

Interesting technique Jim, does it make the new bearing a bit slack in the housing afterwards ?
