Planning to fit a 1931 axle with 1" brake shoes to my Ulster rep which currently has semi-girlings.
I presume I should change the drums to earlier pattern - will everything else fit?
I don't want to convert the axle to semi-girling, but would consider an 'upgrade' to 1 ¼" shoes, in that case which other parts would I need to change?
Any advice appreciated. Fundamentally I'm not sure where that extra ¼" came from... I'd rather find out before I come to fit the axle on the car!

To change your new axle from 1" to 1.25" shoes you'll need to fit 1.25" pre-girling drums and 1.25" brake shoes. That's it.

Thanks Steve. The pivots are the same then?
Logically then I suppose that I only need earlier drums to use the 1" shoes...

you can also use the cast iron girling drums. If you are using early closed center wheels the drums will need a light external skim to fit. regards russell

Thanks Squeak. That sounds like the easiest option as I already have a nice set! Perhaps better to use 1 1/4" shoes in that case if only to wear the drums evenly.
