RP Oil Pressure - Smiley - 09-07-2018

Can anyone advise as to what the Oil Pressure should be on a 1932 RP Box travelling at say 30mph.
I find that on start up it reads full pressure on the dial, then when hot, it drops to around 3 to 4 at 30mph.
Is that acceptable or should it be higher.?
Undecided

No, thats correct

Yes Smiley that is ok. To high could be due to a blocked jet. I run on a 20/50 oil have done so since 1971. Change oil every 1000 miles.

Just to back up what's already been said - your gauge will go to the pin on a cold engine but once it's warm the pressure will settle around 2-4psi dependant on the state of your engine, and possibly even to 0 on tick-over. Don't worry it's quite normal. The RP has a splash fed crank so high oil pressures are not important. Just to emphasise the point here's mine running flat out, with less than 5psi on the gauge.

Ive done about 300mile since Friday in daughters RP.

Once hot got 0 on tickover. About 3 at 30. 5 at 50. 7 at 55.

It has a mixture of 20/50 and 15/40 in it cos I ran out of 20/50

Reckless...55mph in an RP.
tell me it was downhill...

55 was downhill. But it sat for mile after mile at 50.

It has always liked humid weather.

My 55 was on the flat. I've also got it on vidéo. 37 head + H1 SU.

Very impressed, and slightly scared Smile
My current RP top speed is around 45 but I know my top end is tired.

My 1929 RK oil pressure is approximately 1/10th of speed in mph.
I think the specification is between 2 & 4 psi at 30 mph with the engine hot.
I have fitted a Bullnose Morris pressure gauge which is calibrated up to 10psi. When the engine is cold the needle goes right round and hits the stop at zero coming from the other direction. My guess is well over 30psi.
That's OK because the gauge says "Guaranteed to withstand an overload of 200lbs".
The car cruises happily at 50mph. Easily reaches 55 with 60+ downhill.
